Learning who God really is

Just as it is important for us to learn how to listen to God, it is also important for us to learn how to understand who He is. Many of us came to know God by what we have been told or taught about Him from our parents, Sunday-school teachers and preachers. How we consider who God is today can be greatly influenced by the past influences these folks have had on us. How we see God may be based upon how they saw Him. This could be accurate or not. It’s easy to see how our understanding of who God is can be distorted by the attitudes, behaviors, and the instructions of others.

From birth we established a mental system of choices; right-wrong, good-bad, positive and negative. The choices we start out making tend to stay with us throughout our lives. Thankfully, our choices can be changed though, and it is the presence of the Holy Spirit who helps us to be convicted of the proper choices God wants us to make. The Holy Spirit will teach us who God truly is and what He wants for us when we seek Him.

How can we come to a better understanding of God? Through His Word. The Bible is the source of our correct teaching and our understanding. By our reading of the Bible daily and becoming involved in some form of Bible study we learn first hand who God is, and how we are to relate to Him. When we mix our reading of His Word with our prayers to the Holy Spirit, asking for more knowledge of God, we receive our supernatural understanding.

There is no better place to start or start-over learning about God than at the very beginning! Start reading Genesis again for yourself and pray for your better, correct understanding of God. The psalmist wrote in (Psalm 119:33, 34) “Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statues, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”
